Tuesday night we met in Brighton to rehearse 2 songs - "Time To Move On" by The Back Alley Project and "100 in a 55" by Pop Evil.
We performed both of these last night at The Ark, which makes it a trilogy for the year 2009.
Once again we had a nice turnout of friends to come see us and we truly appreciate their support.

Upcoming Ark Appearance - 12/9
On Wednesday, December 9, 2009 we hope to perform for the 3rd time this year at The Ark's open stage.
This time around, we are going to play 1 original and 1 cover.
Original: Time To Move On
Cover: 100 in a 55 by Pop Evil
Most likely, we'll do a single 'cram' rehearsal like we did before our last Ark performance. That's just how we roll.

The Ark - Take 2!
Last night we performed for the second time at the Ark in Ann Arbor, MI.
We learned a few things from the last show, so we came better prepared this time. In other words, we brought people. We learned last time that if you bring 5 or more non-performers with you to the show, it a.) guarantees you a slot (as opposed to gambling in the raffle) and b.) allows you to select which slot you play.
We brought a total of 19 people besides ourselves. Some attendees were a pleasant surprise for us - we didn't know beforehand that they had planned on coming. It was good to see such a turnout, and very flattering.
We selected slot 8 and performed 2 originals: "Trust" and "Happy." This was the first time we had ever performed "Trust" in front of an audience.
The show went well, some pics got posted on Facebook, and we're looking forward to the next time around.

Pre-Ark Rehearsal & Working For Diddy.
Last night we rehearsed at Jason's place in Dexter. We grabbed Jet's on the way there, and watched "I Want To Work For Diddy 2" while we had dinner.
The primary goal of rehearsal was to rehearse the songs that we'll be playing at the Ark tonight - "Trust" and "Happy." We played through each of those songs 3 or 4 times, so hopefully we'll be in pretty good shape for open mic night tonight.
We also played through some additional original songs:
-Simple Days
-Gone Astray*
-Satisfied*
-Time To Move On
-Not On Your Life
-Innocence Inside
-Just Once
*The 2 songs with *'s were impromptu. We hadn't played either in forever, but they worked out pretty well.
Tonight, The Ark. We've invited a small entourage so it should be pretty cool.

On the Road Again...so to speak.
Next Wednesday, November 11, 2009 TBAP will be performing for the second time at open mic night at the Ark in Ann Arbor, MI.
We will be performing the classic TBAP song "Happy" and a somewhat newer song entitled "Trust."
That said, we haven't practiced at all since October 20th. So we are going to cram in a rehearsal or 2 between today and next Wednesday.
Tuesday, after work, Nadon's place. Rehearse, eat, rehearse, Andy takes off for home while Jason attends an online songwriting course.
That's all for now!

Everybody Here Wants You.
Last night I recorded 6 takes of guitar tracks Jeff Buckley's "Everybody Here Wants You" for submission into the Jeff Buckley Tribute contest. 2 acoustic tracks, 4 electric.
Details about the contest are located here.
Here some additional details from the site -
In any case, Jason is going to add vocal tracks to 1 or more of these takes, and we'll submit it for 5 bucks. The final submissions are due Monday, 10/5. We're not expecting to be accepted to perform, but it would be very cool if we got surprised!

Here some additional details from the site -
The 12th Annual Jeff Buckley Tribute is scheduled to take place on November 17th and 18th. The event will be held at Uncommon Ground’s Clark and Grace location. Artists have come from countries such as France, Italy, Denmark, Holland, Mexico, UK, Australia and many others in past years to perform at the tribute.
Artists may submit Jeff Buckley covers OR songs that Jeff Buckley covered; originals about or inspired by Jeff Buckley, in varying styles suitable for conversion to an acoustic/unplugged performance. Selected artists may perform one of each as well on both nights.
This event, which is supported by the Buckley family and featured on the official Jeff Buckley web site, sells out every year in less than 10 minutes for both nights' performances. Jeff Buckley's mother, Mary Guibert, has been known to fly in for this event on many occasions. All net proceeds for the night will go to The Old Town School of Folk Music Scholarship Fund, which allows musicians of all ages who can't afford to pay attend classes.

On a snowy night in February of 1994, Jeff Buckley played a legendary set at Uncommon Ground. This performance was lauded "Best Concert of the Year" by Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune, and was later recalled by Mr. Kot as one of the best concerts he's ever attended.
Jeff Buckley was born in California's Orange County in 1966 and died in a tragic drowning accident in Memphis on May 29, 1997. He had emerged in New York City's avant-garde club scene in the 1990's as one of the most remarkable musical artists of his generation, acclaimed by audiences, critics, and fellow musicians alike. For more information about Jeff, see the official website: www.jeffbuckley.com.

Goal - Perform The Ark: Check.
Last night The Back Alley Project fulfilled one of several long standing goals. We played the Ark's open stage night. Our last live performance was April 1, 2004. That means that 1,987 days passed between performances. I think we just might have set a record with that.
The open stage at the Ark works like this - each performer writes their name on a raffle ticket, which goes into a bucket. Around 8 pm, the host draws eight performers' names at which point they are guaranteed to perform in the first eight slots. After the 2nd or 3rd performer, the host draws an additional eight names for slots 9 - 16. If your name doesn't get drawn, you get to keep your raffle ticket and submit it next time (along with a new entry for a total of two) to increase your chances. Also - if you bring 5 or more non-performing audience members with you, your performance slot is guaranteed - and you get to select your slot (1-16).
The host drew the first 8 names last night around 8:00 pm. No dice.
A couple performers performed, then the host drew the final 8 names. Slot 9 was taken by a duo that had brought 5 or more attendees. Names 10-15 were drawn. Again, no dice. Just when you would have thought we weren't going to perform last night, The Back Alley Project was drawn as slot #16. We were headliners! In a sense.
Jason and I performed "Simple Days" as our first song, followed by some banter, then we moved along to "Locked Away." We were both pretty satisfied with our performances last night. It was exciting to finally play on the same stage we've seen Glen Phillips, Ellis Paul, Teitur, and many others. The acoustics in the Ark, even on the stage, were amazing. It was only a 2 song performance but it was a good (re) starting point for TBAP.
We're going to attempt to play every open stage at the Ark that we can in the future, selecting 2 different songs for each performance.
All in all it was an amazing experience and a major milestone for us. TBAP is back!

The Sugar Loaf Lake Sessions - 9/1/2009
Last night we rehearsed at Jason's place in Chelsea. Brought to you by Leinenkugel and Sam Adams, the "Sugar Loaf Lake Sessions" were recorded for posterity and we ended up with a surprisingly good recording. The following songs were rehearsed -
*Just Once - TBAP
*Not On Your Life - TBAP
*Hiding Out - TBAP
*Everybody Here Wants You - Jeff Buckley
*Second Chance - Shinedown
*100 in a 55 - Pop Evil
We discovered that "Everybody Here Wants You" is as challenging to perform for us as expected, so we plan to add it as a 'new' song for next week's rehearsals. On a related note, we plan to record EHWY for submission into the 12th annual Jeff Buckley tribute - once we get comfortable with our performance of the song, of course. The submissions are due October 5th, so we have about a month to rehearse and attempt a good recording of it.
Next week's rehearsal(s) will be a review week. In other words, we aren't officially adding any new songs to the list. We have quickly built up our set list to 22 songs since August 4th. Not bad for less than a month's worth of rehearsals!
Finally, we are planning to visit the Ark next week and enter their raffle to perform at Open Mic on Wednesday. If our name is drawn, this will give us an opportunity to a.) play the Ark! (2 songs) and b.) rehearse in front of a live audience before the November gig. We will most likely plan to visit the Ark regularly before (and possibly after) the gig to continue improving our live performances.
That's it for now.

Big Beaver Road!
5 months later.....
TBAP has come back from the dead. We are now calling it TZoP - The Zombie Project!
Just kidding. Would we do that? Ok...yes we would....but we're not doing that. That would be ridiculous!
Anyway, we're planning to do a gig in November, 2009. This will serve as a kick in the pants to get us working together regularly in preparation for the gig. If things go according to plan (with TBAP...every 'if' is a big 'IF') we will know 30-40 songs by early November. Included in that 30-40 songs will be every original TBAP song that will eventually appear on the Songs For Sale album (remember....with us eventually could span years, maybe decades!). And once we've rehearsed the originals to the point where we can gig them, we'll be ready to record them. Finally!
Our 1st rehearsal will be Tuesday, August 4th.
We have agreed on learning the following songs for that rehearsal:

The Game Plan.
TBAP's recording project has been moving along....but it has been moving along rather slowly.
In the meantime, Jason and I have started an additional music project - a full rock band that will play entirely cover songs. That project will allow us to have some fun jamming with others and to get us playing music together more regularly. We're quickly building up a set list and may actually be gigging by Summer.
The cover band has been rehearsing on Wednesdays or Thursdays for the past few weeks from 8:30 - 10:30 pm. Part of our plan with this was to get together as TBAP before full band practice and focus on perfecting the originals that will eventually become the "Songs For Sale" album. Now that we've gotten into the swing of things with rehearsing as a full band, we'll start adding a couple of TBAP tunes to rehearse this week and continue until we are working on the full album each week. Shortly after that we will begin recording the CD. You can expect a finished TBAP album in 2009. It's about freakin' time!
